A flower cartridge is not a vape cartridge
Start here, because this is where most of the confusion lives.
When people hear "cartridge," they picture an oil cart: a little glass tank of distillate that you screw onto a battery and vape. That's the cartridge the market trained everyone to expect. It's been the default for years.
A flower cartridge is a different object that happens to share a thread size. It holds flower, actual real buds, instead of oil. It burns that flower instead of atomizing oil or concentrate. It produces smoke, not vapor. And you fill it yourself, because it ships empty.
So the word "cartridge" is doing double duty, and that's worth untangling once, clearly:

How a flower cartridge works
A flower cartridge runs on electric combustion. There's no flame and no lighter.
Inside the cartridge is a heating element (think old school car cigarette lighter). In a FLWRCRT, it's called the FLWRCOIL. You load whole flower into the glass chamber, attach the cartridge to a 510 battery, and press the button. The FLWRCOIL heats and combusts the flower in direct contact with it. Within a few seconds, the chamber fills with smoke, and you draw it through the mouthpiece.
That's the part that surprises people: it's combustion. The same thing that happens when you light a bowl or a joint, flower burning and releasing smoke, just triggered by an electric coil instead of a flame, and contained inside a cartridge instead of a bowl.
This is the line that matters most, so it gets said plainly: a flower cartridge produces smoke through combustion. It is not a vaporizer. Vaporizers are built to heat flower below the point of combustion, releasing vapor and deliberately avoiding smoke. A flower cartridge does the opposite on purpose.
What's in a flower cartridge
A FLWRCRT flower cartridge is a few simple parts, each with one job:
- The glass cartridge: the chamber that holds your flower.
- The FLWRCOIL igniter cap: the electric element that combusts the flower.
- The wooden mouthpiece: what you draw through. Pushing it in also advances the flower toward the coil.
- A 510 connection: so it threads onto a battery you already own.
You bring two things the cartridge doesn't include: a 510 battery and the flower. Everything else is in the box.
How you load it
The short version: use whole nugs, don't grind, fill about three-quarters full, reattach the cap.
The reason you don't grind matters. Ground flower packs in too dense and burns too hot and too fast. You get ash and a harsh pull. Whole flower, broken to fit, has room to breathe and combusts evenly the way it's meant to. So the instruction "use nugs, do not grind" isn't a quirk; it's how the thing is designed to work. Keeping the bud whole also helps preserve more of the goodness that dries out when ground.
Then you attach it to a 510 battery, push the mouthpiece to bring the flower to the coil, and press the button. Smoke in seconds.
It works with the battery you already have
A flower cartridge threads onto any standard 510 battery, the same connection most carts use. If you've owned a vape pen, you likely already have a compatible battery in a drawer.
If your battery has variable voltage, FLWRCRT operates in the 3.5V to 4.5V range. Lower voltage takes longer to heat up the FLWRCOIL; higher voltage ignites faster. Start at the low end and adjust to taste. The one thing that won't work is a proprietary pod battery that isn't true 510-thread.
Refillable, and empty by design
A flower cartridge is refillable. You load it, smoke it, empty it, load it again.
And it ships empty. This is deliberate, and it's a real difference from the oil-cart model: FLWRCRT doesn't sell you flower. You bring your own, whatever strain you like, from wherever you buy it. The cartridge is the hardware; the flower is yours.
Is it legal?
The device itself is cannabis hardware. It holds no cannabis when you buy it. FLWRCRT ships the empty device to adults 21 and over in states where cannabis accessories are legal. Why a flower cartridge exists
Here's the part that isn't mechanics.
Carts won on convenience. Screw it on, press a button, done. No grinding, no packing, no smell of a bowl going stale. That convenience is why so much of the market moved to oil. But the move came with a trade: you gave up flower. You gave up the plant, the actual terpenes, the taste of real flower, in exchange for a tank of distillate with any combination of synthetic additives to make it taste like candy for something that's easy to carry.
A flower cartridge is the new path to purity. It takes the convenience pattern carts established, the 510 battery, the press-and-go, the pocketable format, and puts flower back inside it. Real flower. The convenience of a cart, without giving up the plant to get it.
That's the whole pitch, and it's an old one wearing new hardware: flower was never the problem. It just never got the upgrade.
